So, I saw this incredible movie yesterday. Saw it in 3D, too. First 3D movie I've ever seen. I'd say it was a good choice.
The environment in itself was mind blowing, and the 3D just made it that much more immersive. I cried through just about the entire thing, so much so that I cried all my eyeliner off. there were no streaks, just bare eyes. (And I wore a lot of liner that day). The characters are fantastic -- the development is realistic, the visuals are fabulous, and all in all, I'd say it's probably become my favorite movie. Ever.
Sure, the story isn't original -- how many of those are there nowadays anyways? -- but it's definitely believable. The 3D effects were never "jump out and scare you," it was just another thing to make the movie more immersive -- you felt like you were standing in the middle of Pandora, right beside the characters, watching everything unfold.
The technology and CG were unlike anything I've ever seen before, and considering the time and money spent on the making of this film, I'd say Cameron did an outstanding job.
There is also talk of a 3D Bluray release of the movie shortly after the DVD comes out. I will most likely get both.
Also, the more I think about it, the more I'd like them to make a Dragonriders of Pern movie. Considering, of course, these advances in moviemaking technology. BUT -- they'd better get the dragons right, goddammit!!
They're *supposed* to look like this:
[Edit] So now I've found these articles:

So after lots of digging, I think I'm kind of disappointed in this. Maybe Cameron should have been signed on to do it. :)
